Starting last year, inspired by Gretchin Rubin and Elizabeth Craft and the Happier Podcast, I have chosen a “One-Word Theme for the Year.” My one-word theme in 2019 was Enthusiasm, inspired by this post about practicing maximum enthusiasm. I may have faltered a bit as I entered the 9th month of pregnancy or day two of labor, but overall I give myself an A! My husband will note I never give myself less than an A- for anything, but that’s a story for another day.
Today I want to share my 2020 one-word theme: WALK.
One of my unofficial new year’s resolutions is to walk more this year. The health benefits of walking are numerous, so I want to go for more walks around my neighborhood and of course meet up with friends for walks around Green Lake (my favorite walk in Seattle). I also want to walk to the store when it makes sense, and park farther away from the store in the parking lot.

Another reason the word walk makes sense this year is because I am going to graduate! This summer, I will walk across the stage and receive my PhD in Marketing from the University of Washington. As any graduate student will tell you, this is something to celebrate.
I’m getting the whole family in on this word as well. My daughter, Kerri, was born in October 2019, and she will take her first steps this year! We aren’t sure when, but we’ll be helping her learn how to walk when that time comes.

I also intend to improve my walk of faith. I don’t know exactly what that will look like this year, but I think that’s okay. One thing I do know is that I feel closest to God when I’m in nature. Thus, getting outside for a walk does double duty there! Although we don’t want her to grow up, PQ and I can’t wait for Kerri to get to 16 pounds, so she fits in the hiking backpack we got from my parents (and REI).
This last one is a little cheesy, but I’ll include it anyway. In April, I get to walk the historic grounds of Augusta National at the Masters. I am looking forward to this once in a lifetime vacation – who should my money be on?
