I made this website and committed to starting a blog in January 2015. Coincidentally, 9 days into that year I met my now fiancé, and as our relationship progressed and I worked towards a PhD in a new city I guess it just wasn’t in the cards. The first post is the hardest though (I’m guessing), so if I can post one, I’m hoping that making this a weekly thing will be much easier!
So why did I start a blog? On some levels, I’m not sure why I decided to start a blog. I’m a busy grad student, I have never done this before, I have no intent to monetize the thing, I have to write enough in school as it is, do I really want to spend my free time writing more? However, starting a blog is something I’ve always wanted to do and if I don’t just start, it will always exist in “tomorrow.”
I delayed starting this blog for a number of reasons. I thought I was “too busy.” I wanted it to be perfectly thought out before I even began. I was worried that if I couldn’t write a novel every day I shouldn’t even begin. And I’m still not even sure how my humor and opinions will come across in a written format!
I’ve never been great at journaling, despite the proven benefits of daily writing, 3-minute journals, morning pages, etc. Like I said, this is mostly for myself anyway. I hope that I can keep this going though and have at least a partial record of my PhD program, my engagement, and various other daily activities.
I don’t know exactly how often I’ll post, what I will post about, or how the blog may change as things get underway. I don’t have the intent to write about sports on Tuesdays, school on Thursdays, and fashion on Sundays (let’s be honest this might be a sparse topic anyway). I also won’t be writing solely about any one thing (e.g., wedding planning, recipes, Seattle). The theme of the blog is meant to mimic my generally inquisitive nature. Starting with the question “Why I” will encourage introspection on my part, but this is not to say it will always be highbrow. A very real blog post may in fact be “Why I Have Gone Through So Many Phones” – which would simply be an account of numerous bad decisions (e.g., buying a MyTouch, not having a crossbody purse until I turned 24).
One thing I do intend to include each week is a picture and favorite quote. I passively enjoy photography, and I think quotes can be powerful, but have never been in a good habit of documenting my favorite ones.
When it comes down to it though, this is really just a personal thing. If just two other people read it, that’ll be more than I ever expected or intended (I say two because we know my mom will be all about it). If you’ve read this entire first post, you rock! Enjoy.
